Rediscovering Ethiopia: Ras Abye’s Journey from Diaspora to Home

Volcano in the Afar Region:

“Like open heart surgery. You see the earth breathing. I could hear it inhale and exhale. This earth is alive.”

“It’s rare for someone of our generation to know Ethiopia as well as I do. But I chose to know it — because why not?”

For many in the diaspora, Ethiopia is a land of history, culture, and wonder — yet often overlooked. Ras Abye, a born Ethiopian, embodies the journey of rediscovery and reconnection with the homeland, showing that Ethiopia is more than just a destination; it’s a place of transformation.

From Addis Ababa to the World

Ras Abye was born near the train station in Addis Ababa, into a family of railroad workers. His early life introduced him to both movement and opportunity. He attended French schools in Ethiopia, and during the Cuban Revolution, he moved to Djibouti, learning independence at just 17 years old.

From Djibouti, he journeyed to the United States, living mostly in the Hawaiian Islands. Despite the distance, Ethiopia never left his heart. About 25 years ago, Ras Abye returned home, determined to explore his country in a way few of his peers had: traveling from north to south, east to west, discovering Ethiopia’s hidden gems, natural wonders, and vibrant culture.

The Call of the Land

Ethiopia’s landscapes are unlike any other in the world. Ras Abye recalls standing before Erta Ale, the active volcano in the Afar region:

“Like open heart surgery. You see the earth breathing. I could hear it inhale and exhale. This earth is alive.”

From volcanic craters to the Danakil Depression, the Simien Mountains, and over 200 natural springs, Ethiopia is a living canvas of breathtaking sights. But more than scenery, Ras Abye emphasizes that these experiences transform the traveler.

Beyond Tourism: Rediscovering Identity

For Ras Abye, Ethiopian tourism isn’t just about attracting foreign visitors. It’s about Ethiopians and the diaspora reconnecting with their heritage.

“Even though we were never colonized, we have colonized minds. Tourism should first transform us, then welcome the world.”

Visiting Ethiopia offers the diaspora a chance to reconnect with:

  • Ancestral roots
  • Living culture, music, and traditions
  • A sense of identity and belonging

It’s this vision that drives diaspora2lucy.com — creating a platform where Ethiopians worldwide can celebrate culture, reconnect with their roots, and explore opportunities back home.

Ethiopia: A Place of Transformation

Ethiopia is not just a travel destination; it is a place that transforms. Visiting exposes travelers to:

  • Cultural heritage – traditional music, dances, and festivals
  • Adventure tourism – volcano treks, highland hikes, and desert explorations
  • Diaspora opportunities – reconnecting with family, culture, and potential collaborations

Through these experiences, travelers do more than see Ethiopia — they experience it, and in doing so, rediscover themselves.
